LEADERSHIP: THE USE OF PERSONAL POWER IN ADVOCACY
Presenter: Tom Pomeranz, Universal LifeStyles
This
motivating and inspiring address provides support recipients, family members
and staff with best practice strategies to demonstrate effective Leadership.
The session details specific suggestions regarding how attendees can enhance
their personal power and increase their effectiveness as advocates through
leadership. Dr. Tom Pomeranz emphasizes that people tend to resist positional
authority but are inspired by leadership. Thus, those who aspire to improving
the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities must be
able to exercise personal power. It is through personal power that unity
of cause is realized and collegial relationships are solidified.
Tom
will provide attendees with strategies to enhance their personal power.
Specifically, the skills of Likeability will be emphasized. Tom will promote
the notion "that our lives are impacted more by the choices people
make about us than the choices we make about them." The hierarchy
of Likeability is presented as a framework for influencing how others
see us. The mantra is "R before I and T - Relationships before Issues
and Tasks."
